Damien Cuevas

Football (2009)
Damien CuevasOne of two football inductees in this year’s hall of fame class, Damien Cuevas is a 2009 BHS graduate where he played the grid sport four years, earning three varsity letters overall. He also earned a letter as a member of the Track and Field team the only year that he was a member of the school’s cinders squad. Damien’s scholastic career as a Spartan footballer is well-documented as he was a two-time all-Federal League selection, also earning all-District honors on two occasions. He served as team captain his senior season where he was special mention all-State and selected to the Big 22 team. At the time of his graduation, he placed first overall in program history with 236 points – he scored 39 total touchdowns during his prep career – and was third overall for most touchdowns in a season, crossing the goal line 22 times as a senior in 2008. His five touchdowns versus Massillon Perry put him atop the single game standard listing while his 2,497 career rushing yards was third overall in that category. He held two of the top six spots for yards rushing in a single season, racing past opponents to the tune of 1,227 yards in 2008 (third overall) as a senior while posting 1,166 ground yards in 2007 as a junior, good enough for sixth overall. Damien’s 85-yard touchdown reception in 2008 was the third longest in program history.

Upon graduation, he served in the Marine Corps from 2014-2018 where he was an Honor Graduate from Recruit Training, serving his country and was Honorably dis- charged with his rank as Sergeant. He is currently a lineman for Georgia Power and was awarded the company’s “Spirit of Safety” award, presented to him for resuscitating a man who stopped breathing in his car and ultimately saving his life. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.


April Melquist Helfrick

Basketball / Volleyball (2006)
April HelfrickA four-year letter winner in both basketball and volleyball for the Spartans, April Melquist Helfrick was a varsity player from the time she stepped onto the court as a freshman until her eligibility was completed her senior year. A first-team All-District selection as a junior in volleyball, she followed that up with her selection to play in the District All-Star game the following year, her final scholastic campaign. Her star shone brightest on the basketball court, however, where she gained varsity experience as a freshman then over her final three seasons earned a myriad of both post-season and in-season honors. As a sophomore in 2003-04, she was an honorable mention Northeast Ohio selection then as a junior was accorded first-team all-Federal League laurels, second team all-Northeastern Ohio and All-District honors, was an all-Ohio honorable mention pick and was named to the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) All-State tournament team. She helped the Spartans to the Federal League crown her junior campaign. Her senior year she was selected as a WKBN-TV, Channel 27 “Athlete-of-the-Week,” was an all-state honorable mention pick for the second straight year, earned second team All-Federal League honors and was chosen to play in the Mahoning Valley Senior All-Star game for the second time in four months between the two sports.

Upon graduation, she attended Malone University for a year where she was a member of the Pioneers’ volleyball team. She transferred to YSU for her sophomore year, later earning her undergraduate degree in 2011. She currently works for McKinsey and Company, a consulting firm and along with husband, Ryan, they are the proud parents of two daughters, Charlee and Bexley and reside in St. Petersburg, Florida.

 


T.J. Hosa

Soccer (2007)
T.J. HosaMention the name T.J. Hosa and invariably what comes to mind is that he was one of the toughest and most versatile soccer players to ever come through the program at Boardman High School. A 2007 Summa Cum Laude BHS graduate, his leadership abilities were well documented when he served as captain of both the soccer and basketball teams his senior year. His varsity career included earning six overall letters, four in soccer and two more in basketball. In soccer he had the type of career by which future Spartan soccer players would soon be judged. After an impressive freshman season, he would earn first-team All-District and second-team All-Federal League honors his sophomore year in 2004. As a junior, he made the transition to offense and led the team in goals and for his efforts was named first-team All-District, first team All-Federal League while being accorded first-team All-Mahoning County laurels. T.J. was also a third-team All-State selection while being honored as District 1 “Player of the Year.” In 2006, T.J. led the team in goals for a second straight season earning first-team All-Federal League, All-District and All-Mahoning County honors.

Upon graduation, he attended The Ohio State University so he could pursue a career in the health care field. He graduated from OSU in 2011 with his Bachelor’s degree (Cum Laude) in exercise science and in 2015, earned his Doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) from Ohio University. For the past decade he has been a practicing physical therapist, specializing in neurological disease and injury at The Recovery Project in Livonia, Michigan. He and his wife, Mollie, are the proud parents of a son, Thomas, and are expecting a baby girl in the fall. They currently reside in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.


Armani Johnson

Baseball (2006)
Armani JohnsonThe lone baseball inductee in this year’s class, Armani Johnson also played football for three seasons, earning six total letters – three in each sport – and was named team captain his senior season in both sports. It was on the diamond, however, where he was to be a most productive member of the Spartans. He helped the Spartans to the 2005 and 2006 Sectional titles and was named to the All-Federal League team during both his junior and senior campaigns. Armani was inducted into the BHS National Honor Society in 2005 and was named one of the Top-100 players in the State of Ohio during the 2006 recruiting cycle. On the summer sandlot, he was a member of the 2003 Babe Ruth 14 Year-Old World Series championship team, which remains the only local team to win a national title in that division. He set the record for most pitches thrown in a game (152) and was awarded the Del Lowery Award, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the Code of the Babe Ruth League. Armani was also selected to the Connie Mack Tournament All-tourney squad in 2005.

Upon graduation, he attended Brescia University in Kentucky, where he was named to the KIAC (Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) All-Freshman baseball team, also earning KIAC honorable mention All- conference laurels. He transferred to YSU and played three seasons, serving as captain his senior year. Earning his undergraduate degree in 2011, he currently serves as a senior account director of sales at LinkedIn where in 2021, he was the recipient of their Embody DIB award, presented to the LinkedIn Detroit employee that em- bodies Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. He and his wife, Greta, are the proud parents of a daughter, Sloane, and recent family addition, daughter Skylar, born this past June, and reside in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan.

 


Corey Linsley

Football / Track & Field (2009)
Corey LinsleyA football & track and field standout for the Spartans, Corey Linsley earned six total Varsity letters. during a stellar scholastic athletic career, three in each sport. As a member of the school’s track and field squad, he was State champion in the discus (2009) with a school record toss of 191’ 2” , and placing third in the shot-put as well. A Nike All-American in indoor track, he qualified in 2008 and the following year finished third in the shot put. At the indoor state championship, Corey finished as runner-up in 2008 and was the shot-put champion in 2009. A four-time Federal League individual champion, he holds the District records in both the shot-put and discus, the Federal League record in the shot-put, and was regional titlist in both the discus (2009) and shot put (2008), winning the District championship in the discus (2009) and shot put on two separate occasions, (2007 & 2009). It was in football, however, that he caught the eye of the college scouts and coaches. During his Spartan career, he was a first-team All-Federal League pick on two separate occasions (2007, 2008), and earned second-team All-Ohio laurels during both his junior and senior campaigns.

Upon graduation he earned a scholarship to The Ohio State University after being recruited by head coach Jim Tressel. Corey later played a season for Luke Fickell and his final two years, he played under coach Urban Meyer, helping the Buckeyes to a 53-12 overall mark, and a 33-7 Big Ten record. He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2013, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors his junior campaign as well. Graduating in 2013, he was the 21st player selected in the fifth-round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and that fall as a rookie, started the first game of the season. He played and started 99 games for the Green Bay Packers (2014-20) and 33 games for the Los Angeles Chargers (2021-23), being named All-Pro in 2021-22. A three-year captain with the Chargers, he was the team’s Walter Payton “Man of the Year” nominee in 2021 and is well-known for his community involvement and philanthropy during his time in both Green Bay and Los Angeles. Along with Bernie Kosar, Steve Vallos and John Greco, he is one of four Spartan gridders to earn the right to play in the NFL. Corey works closely with the group CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), which advocates for both foster and CPS (Child Protective Services) kids. He and his wife, Anne, are the parents of four children, Seamus, Killian, Ruth and Quinn and reside in Newport Beach, California.


Caleb Matthews

Track & Field (2009)
Caleb MatthewsOne of two track and field-cross country inductees in this year’s hall of fame class, Caleb Matthews is a 2009 BHS graduate who helped lead the Spartan track team to the County, Federal League and District championship three consecutive years (2007-09). He also helped BHS to a third-place finish at the indoor state championships in both 2008 and 2009, the team finishing sixth at the outdoor championship in 2009. A Nike All-American in the indoor pentathlon, he was a three-time (2007-09) County “Rob Ruane Most-Valuable-Player.” A seven time individual County champion, he was a four-time Federal League individual champion and six-time District individual champ in the long jump. Caleb was two-time All-Ohio at the outdoor State meet, finishing sixth in the 300m in 2008 and seventh in the long jump in 2009. He qualified for the Indoor National Championships in the high jump in 2008 and is a five time All-Ohio indoor honoree. A two-time State qualifier in the 110 high hurdles, he tied the County high jump record and at the time of his graduation, established new program standards in the 300m and long jump. His long jump record, which stood for 71 years until he took over the top spot, remains the top mark now 15 years after his graduation.

Upon completion of his scholastic career, he attended the University of Pittsburgh where he was a key member of the Panthers’ track squad. He is currently a small business owner, seeking certification as a personal trainer through the National Council of Strength and Fitness. He is the proud father of a son, Zaire Royal Revel-Matthews, and along with his partner Marlo Revel and her child Saveria Winstead, they reside in Tallahassee, Florida.


Matthew Moore

Cross Country / Track & Field (2008)
Matthew MooreWhen talking about the all-time Cross Country and Track and Field greats from Boardman High School, Matthew Joseph Moore’s name is one name undoubtedly appearing on that short list of runners. A 2008 BHS graduate, Matt earned three letters each as a key member of the school’s cross country, and track and field teams. On the track side of the ledger, he was a three time Nike National Championship qualifier – in 2005, 2007 & 2008. A State qualifier in the 800m, he is a three-time indoor all-Ohio honoree and the current school record holder in the 800m and 4 X 400. Matt is also the County, District and Ward Invitational record holder in the 4 X 800 with the County and Ward Invitational records remaining the top standard at both events. He was a two-time District champion, a three-time County champion and Federal League champion in the 800m. A four-time all-Ohio Indoor, Outdoor qualifier in the 800m, he was a key member of the Spartans’Federal League, District and County championship teams in both 2007 and 2008. In cross country, he ranked fourth overall, was a State qualifier in 2007 when he posted a .986 winning percentage his senior year. He earned First-team all-Federal League with a three year regular season mark of 103-0. During his time with the program, the team won three County and Suburban League championships and qualified for regional all three seasons.

Upon graduation, he received a scholarship to Ashland University where he ran for the Eagles for two years. He returned home and decided to join the Police Academy, attending the academy at Kent-Trumbull University. He received his first commission as a reserve with the Mahoning County Sheriff and Austintown Township departments and after serving several years full-time with the Sheriff, he settled in at the Kent City Police Department where he has served as a patrolman for four years. He currently lives in Rootstown where he resides with his three children, Maximus, Alena and Sienna.


Bryant Salcedo

Tennis (2007)
Bryant SalcedoOne of the best tennis players ever to play for the Spartans, Bryant Salcedo is a 2011 alum of Vanderbilt University where he had a stellar Division I career as a four- year letter winner for the Commodores. He joins his brother, Robert, as a member of this year’s hall of fame class. He earned four letters under the watchful eye of head coach Steve Warden, qualifying for State as a freshman where he advanced to the quarter-finals. As a senior, he joined his brother as they placed third overall at State in doubles, finishing his scholastic career undefeated at No. 1 in all regular season matches. Bryant was ranked 16th nationally, second in the Great Lakes region by tennisrecruiting.net, winning national opens in Lexington, KY & Wayland, MA.

Upon graduation he was awarded a scholarship to Vanderbilt University – also being recruited by Notre Dame, Illinois and TCU. As a freshman, he posted a 15-13 singles mark, and finished with a 12-11 dual ledger despite missing the majority of the season due to injury. He closed the season by winning three of his final four matches helping the team advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a sophomore, Bryant was selected to the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll and defeated 2009 NCAA Singles Champion Devin Britton of Ole Miss in dual play and led Vandy to a 4-3 win over North Carolina State, defeating four ranked opponents that season. Named to the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll a second straight year as a junior, he finished 16-15 in singles and went 11-11 in dual play and capped off his collegiate career in 2010-11 by going 20-13 overall, posting a 14-9 dual match record while on his way to earing his fourth letter for the Commodores, plating in the tough Southeastern Conference. Bryant earned his undergraduate degree in 2011 and currently serves as director of sales for Fagron Pharmaceutical Compounding. He and his daughter, Grace, reside in Austin, Texas.


Robert Salcedo

Tennis (2009)
Robert SalcedoOne half of this year’s hall of fame tennis brothers’ honorees, Robert Salcedo is a 2009 BHS graduate and 2013 graduate of the University of Dayton. A four-year letter winner for the Spartans, he was a state qualifier as a freshman en route to earning third-team all-State laurels. As a sophomore in 2007, he finished third at State in doubles and team event competition, earning first-team all-State laurels in the process. Robert was third at state in doubles as a junior and a second-team all-State honoree then during his senior campaign, he capped off a stellar scholastic career by being named Federal League “Player of the Year.” His final prep season also included a Top-8 finish at State in singles, producing a second-team all-state honor as well. An honor student during his BHS career, his four-year varsity resume includes conference “Player of the Year” as well as one first team, two second-team and a third-team All-State selection.

Upon graduation, he earned a scholarship to Dayton University and as a member of the Flyers’ team proceeded to earn “Freshman of the Week” honors, his leadership skills most evident as he was named team captain his junior and senior campaigns. Also, as a senior he was the recipient of the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award, presented to the Flyers’ tennis team member who is in good academic standing, and demonstrates a commitment to community service and student leadership. He currently serves as regional sales manager for Calculated Hire, a company that connects talented job-seekers of all backgrounds to new opportunities within their careers while providing top-shelf talent to their clients. Along with wife, Maureen, they are the proud parents of a son, Vincent, and reside in Columbus.


Stephen Sullivan

Bowling (2007)
Stephen SullivanThe lone bowler in this year’s class, Stephen Sullivan is a 2007 BHS graduate and two-year letter winner who performed on head coach Al Dohar’s highly-respected Spartan teams. He was a member of the JV team his freshman and sophomore seasons, his final two seasons the most memorable as the Spartans qualified for State both years. The team finished 14th his senior season – Cincinnati LaSalle won the tournament with a 3057 (1081-1059-917) with BHS posting a 2765 (918-1011-836). Sullivan, however, posted a runner-up finish at State in the individual competition, rolling a 685 (238-253-194) set. As part of the Spartan Team he helped the them to a 10-4 overall mark as a junior and 11-0 record his senior season with two District championships and a Top-3 Regional finish his final two varsity campaigns.

Upon graduation, he attended the University of Toledo, later transferring to Youngstown State University where he was a key member of both the Rockets and Penguins’ club bowling teams, bowling two years for each squad. He has accounted for three, perfect 300 games and has a high set of 804 to his credit, that coming locally at Wedgewood Lanes and has won the 2010 AMF Championship in Las Vegas. A cum-laude YSU graduate, he earned his BSN degree in 2014 and since 2018, he has served as an RNFA (Registered Nurse, First Aid) at the Cleveland Clinic, working in its cardiac surgery-lung transplant area. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of a daughter, Avery, and reside in Madison, Ohio.

 


Scott Warden

Tennis (2008)
Scott WardenOne of three tennis inductees in this year’s class, Scott Warden is the definition of the term student-athlete, as he was as solid in the classroom as he was on the court, earning a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average during his scholastic career and earning the honor of Valedictorian of his graduating class. A four-year letter winner, Scott was the team’s number one singles player as a freshman – and a two-time State qualifier who helped the Spartans to a third-place finish at State in 2007. He served as team captain all four varsity campaigns and in 2008, along with this year’s HOF inductee and teammate, Robert Salcedo, finished third overall at State in the dou- bles competition and earned All-Federal League honors and was a four-time District qualifier all four seasons while a Spartan.

Upon graduation, Scott was awarded a scholarship to the University of Connecticut, earning an undergraduate degree in business in 2012. He was a two-year team captain for the Huskies, a four-time Big East Conference All-Academic honoree, was named “Outstanding Scholar Athlete” in 2012, and was a four year member of the Dean’s List, a Presidential Scholar and member of the school’s honors program. During his collegiate career, he posted a 76-47 singles mark, was 36-32 in dual meet action and 40-15 in tournament play. Playing, at No. 1 his final three seasons, he authored an 83-47 career mark, going 43-23 in dual meets and 40-24 in tournament play. Overall, in both singles and doubles action, he finished his collegiate career with a highly respectful 159-94 (.629) overall record. Scott currently serves as managing director at Webster Bank and along with his wife, Abby, are the proud parents of a son, Wesley and reside in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
